The Performance

The story tells us how the visit of the Empress Eugenie to Bournemouth in 1896 came to be. After being exiled from France, losing first her husband and then her son in the Boer War she was deeply unhappy and her doctor referred her to Bournemouth to convalesce. In order to cheer her, a gardener decided to light her path to the sea with tea lights so she could walk by the water, starting the tradition of the annual 'Flowers by Candlelight'. This performance will track Eugenie's life in a magical journey through the gardens.
